This summer is a perfect time to think about properly protecting your eyes. Burned corneas are a very real risk during the summer and these tips will help you avoid it and a range of other summer-related eye problems.

Use sun protection

Sun protection is a must during summer. If you are going to be outdoors in the summer, sunscreen is not going to be enough. In addition to sunscreen, be sure to invest in a visor cap and sunglasses to protect your eyes. UVA and UVB rays from the sun are highly damaging to the eyes and good quality sunglasses are a must to keep them away from your eyes. Look for polarized lenses and a good fit for the best coverage. Aside from immediate damage, over-exposure to the sun can also increase your risk of developing cataracts later in life.

Wear good eye protection against impact

Summer is a time for outdoor activities, sports and home improvement projects for many people. A simple task such as mowing the lawn can cause eye damage in a flash. A flying rock, a fast blade of grass or a bit of debris can hit someone’s eyes and cause various complications. It is very important that you use adequate eye protection when you are undertaking tasks where things can fly around. Any sport that involves balls such as softball, baseball, golf, paintball or tennis can damage the eyes. Wherever possible, be sure to wear protective goggles to keep your eyes safe from impact.

Protect your eyes against chemicals

Summer means swimming pools and bug spray. If you jump in a pool, you may feel a sting in your eyes. Be sure to keep your eyes safe with goggles as stinging eyes from pool water may lead to redness and irritated eyes. Insect repellents also come out on summer to keep insects away. Be careful to avoid getting the spray in your eyes and to keep your house well-guarded against insects. If you plan on swimming or diving in untreated pond water, there is a chance that the water may get under your lens and cause infections.
