Sharpen Your Vision,

Shape Your Future

A toric lens is a specialized type of intraocular lens (IOL) specifically designed to correct astigmatism, something standard monofocal or multifocal lenses cannot do. If you have astigmatism along with cataracts, or if you are considering refractive lens exchange surgery, Dr. Benaim will discuss the option of a toric lens to ensure your astigmatism is properly corrected, offering you clearer and sharper vision.

Accordion Content
  • A toric lens is a type of intraocular lens (IOL) designed to correct astigmatism.
  • Unlike standard monofocal or multifocal lenses, a toric lens has different powers in different meridians of the lens to compensate for the uneven curvature of the cornea or natural lens.
  • It is implanted during cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange to replace the cloudy or damaged natural lens and provide sharper, clearer vision.
  • Astigmatism Correction: Toric lenses are specifically made to correct astigmatism, which standard lenses cannot address.
  • Sharper Vision: By correcting both cataracts and astigmatism, toric lenses offer clearer vision at a single distance (with monofocal lenses) or at multiple distances (with multifocal lenses).
  • Reduced Dependence on Glasses: A toric lens may significantly reduce your reliance on glasses or contact lenses, especially for distance vision.
  • Improved Vision: Most patients notice much clearer vision shortly after surgery. Depending on the type of lens, you may experience improved near, intermediate, and distance vision.
  • Mild Discomfort: It’s common to feel mild irritation or dryness in the eyes for a few days after surgery, but this usually resolves quickly.
  • Quick Recovery: You’ll need to follow post-op care instructions, but most patients resume normal activities within a day. Your vision will continue to improve as your eyes heal.

Toric lenses are a great option if:

  • You have astigmatism in addition to cataracts or are considering refractive lens exchange surgery.
  • You want sharper vision and less dependence on glasses after surgery.
  • You have realistic expectations about how much your vision can improve.

Toric lenses can be either:

  • Monofocal: Corrects astigmatism and provides sharp vision at a single distance (usually for distance vision). You may still need glasses for reading or close-up work.
  • Multifocal: Corrects astigmatism and provides clear vision at multiple distances (near, intermediate, and far), reducing your need for glasses altogether.

Dr. Benaim and his team will discuss your specific needs and help you decide which lens is the best fit for your vision correction. The decision will be based on whether you have astigmatism.
