Affecting all ages, Blepharitis is a usually non-contagious and common eye disorder that is caused by bacterial or skin conditions. It involves the inflammation of the eyelash follicles, along the edge of the eyelid, forming dandruff-like scales on the eyelashes. Even though most experts treat Blepharitis as a very serious condition, it isn’t known to cause any permanent damage to one’s eyesight.
Symptoms of Blepharitis include crusting, redness, swelling, itching, burning, excessive tearing, dry eyes blurring of vision, inflammation of the cornea and other eye tissues, loss of eyelashes, and a gritty sensation when blinking. There are two types of blepharitis. Anterior blepharitis occurs at the outside front edge of the eyelid where the eyelashes are attached and posterior blepharitis affects the inner edge of the eyelid that comes in contact with the eyeball. In many cases, good eyelid hygiene and a regular cleaning routine can control blepharitis. This includes frequent scalp and face washing, using warm compresses to soak the eyelids, and doing eyelid scrubs. In cases where a bacterial infection is the cause, various antibiotics and other medications may be prescribed along with eyelid hygiene.
